Pascal de Lagausie, a good person and a great master in pediatric surgery, passed away at the age of 55 years. He belonged to the young generation of surgeons who developed the field of minimal access surgery in children. He was not only an experienced surgeon but a superb teacher and over all a great human being as well.

He was born in Paris, but he completed his medical school studies at Aix-Marseille University. Then he moved back to Paris to complete his specialization in pediatric surgery. Later on, he worked as a consultant at the Robert Debre Hospital and finally went back to Marseille, where he was appointed as a consultant surgeon and University Professor at the Timone Hospital in the year 2004. Well known for all european pediatric surgeons he opened new frontiers, he established well accepted standards in the field of thoracoscopy, especially in the area of lung resection and advanced techniques in laparoscopic surgery.

He was a very prolific author, publishing more than 170 scientific articles and textbook chapters. He also liked to interact with colleagues around the world, so he gave more than 300 lectures and oral presentations. His vast knowledge in pediatric surgery was especially evident in the areas of congenital diaphragmatic hernia, esophageal atresia, CPAM, bronchogenic cysts, foregut duplications, biliary and pancreatic diseases and malformations, etc. In research he contributed to many areas like topics related with nitric oxide pathway, calretinine, investigations in Hirschsprung’s disease, endotheline receptors expression in CDH, etc.

Seven years ago a debilitating and progressive disease developed but did not prevented him of keeping participating in congresses, meetings and symposium, giving us his wisdom in all areas of work.

He unfortunately passed away in his home in Marseille with his life partner Claudine, family, and friends by his side. Pediatric surgeons all over the world will remember Pascal de Lagausie for his human and scientific qualities, his charming friendship and goodness.
